The first World Vegan Day was created to mark the 50th anniversary of the society, held on 1 November 1994. This was later extended to become World Vegan Week and, as we now know it, World Vegan Month. Every November, World Vegan Month is celebrated worldwide as a time to shine a light on the vegan movement.

Afro-veganism is a lifestyle and dietary choice that combines the principles of veganism with African heritage and cuisine. It emphasizes the consumption of plant-based foods while incorporating traditional African ingredients, cooking methods, and flavors. Afro-veganism celebrates the diversity of African culinary traditions and highlights the health benefits of a plant-based diet.

  1. Jollof Rice: A popular West African dish made with rice, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, and a blend of spices. This flavorful dish can be customized with additional vegetables and protein sources like tofu or beans.
  2. Fufu and Peanut Soup: Fufu is a staple food in many African countries made from starchy ingredients like yam or cassava. Peanut soup is a hearty and creamy soup made with peanut butter, vegetables, and spices. This combination creates a satisfying and nutritious meal.
  3. Collard Greens and Black-Eyed Peas: Collard greens are a common ingredient in Southern and African cuisine. When cooked with black-eyed peas, onions, garlic, and spices, it creates a comforting and flavorful dish rich in protein and fiber.
